Mexico: 15 police officers killed in ambush criminal

Mexico: 15 police officers killed in ambush criminal
Fifteen police officers were killed in a criminal ambush in western Mexico, one of the most deadly attacks on security forces since the launch of the offensive against drug traffickers in 2006.

The attack occurred Monday on a mountain road near the beach resort of Puerto Vallarta leading to Guadalajara, Mexico's second largest city, by gunmen who opened fire on a convoy of vehicles from the state police Jalisco.

Mexico: 15 police officers killed in ambush criminal  The head of security of the State, Francisco Alejandro Solorio, told the press that they had also counted five policemen injured, now in "stable condition".

Authorities found evidence that the attack had been carefully prepared for 24 to 48 hours in a secluded area near the municipality of San Sebastián del Oeste. It has so far been reported no casualties among the aggressors.

"The passage of vehicles was blocked. They started watering the vehicle with gasoline before setting it on fire, and when colleagues have tried to respond to the attack, they were attacked by a large number people, "he told Mr. Solorio.

According to the authorities, it would be a revenge of a criminal group after the arrest of suspects in a failed attack against Mr. Solorio on 30 March.

"These attacks are a reaction of organized crime after an attack against me," said Solorio.

He did not specify which group was responsible for the attack, which resulted in four arrests, but an official source told AFP that he could be the local Jalisco New Generation cartel.

According to Raul Benitez Manaut, a security expert at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the cartel "has very well prepared and coordinated units".

"They probably have former military to organize the cells of criminals fighters."

More than 80,000 dead since 2006

For several weeks the narco group faces the security forces.

The attempted assassination of Solorio was itself a risposte a police operation on March 23 in the city of Zacoalco Torres, during which three suspects were killed, including Heriberto Acevedo, alias "El Gringo", the One of cartel leaders.

Four days earlier, on 19 March, another ambush by armed men against a police convoy near Ocotlan had 11 dead, five members of the gendarmerie, three alleged attackers and three people outside the confrontation.

Jalisco cartel emerged in 2010 after the death of Ignacio Coronel Villareal, aka "Nacho Coronel", who was the leader in the State of Jalisco of the Sinaloa cartel, the most powerful of Mexico.

Criminals have already attacked several times to the authorities in the State of Jalisco last year.

In September, an MP was kidnapped as he was driving to Guadalajara airport. His charred body was found a few hours later in a neighboring state.

In May, a group of 30 men armed with grenades had organized an ambush against a military truck near the town of Guachinango, killing four of the soldiers.

Jalisco, a state of over seven million people with coasts on the Pacific, was included last year by the Government in the list of priority countries for its security strategy with Michoacan (west), Guerrero (south) and Tamaulipas (northeast).

More than 80,000 people have been killed and 20,000 are missing since the launch of a war against drug traffickers in 2006 by former President Felipe Calderon.

His successor Peña Nieto ensures that crime has decreased since the beginning of his term in December 2012.

However, Mexico continues to be the scene of clashes resulting in numerous casualties.

The last most spectacular case was the disappearance in September 43 students from the normal Ayotzinapa school, according to the judicial authorities, were killed and burned by drug traffickers benefiting from the complicity of the local police in the state Guerrero.
