Health costs about $ 11,000 to the Quebec family
Health costs about $ 11,000 to the Quebec family

While Quebecers do not pay directly for medical services, a large portion of their taxes used to finance health care.

Thus, the average Canadian family of two adults and two children and an income of about $ 118,000 will contribute up to $ 11,786 to the public health care system in 2014, according to a new study published today by the Fraser Institute.

Most people do not know the true cost of health care because they do not charge their medical and hospital services, the latter being covered by health insurance financed by public funds, can be read in the study.

For a family whose income is about $ 58,000, nearly $ 5,500 of tax that goes to the health system.

And for a person living alone whose income is about $ 42,000, it finances public health insurance in the amount of $ 4,381.

The study authors also noted that from 2004 to 2014, the cost of public health insurance supported by the average Canadian family (all family types combined) increased by 53.3%. According to them, this increase is significantly higher than that of income (34.7%) and the cost of housing (40.7%), clothing (33.4%) and food (15.6%).

"  When Canadians know exactly how much are their health care, they can decide whether the current system gives them value for their money," says Bacchus Barua, study co-author and senior economist at the Centre for Research Policy health of the Fraser Institute.
