Sleep helps the brain to clean up

    Sleep allows the brain to clean the waste accumulated during the sleep period with a newly discovered , especially active during sleep mechanism , shows research published last week.

    This discovery could advance understanding of the biological functions of sleep and help find treatments against neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's , say the researchers , whose work is published in the journal Science .

    "This research shows that the brain has different operating states during periods of wakefulness and sleep (...) In fact, the recuperative nature of sleep resulting from the disposal of waste generated by neuronal activity that accumulate during the awakening . "

   For cleaning work , the brain uses a unique system called ' glymphatique highly active during sleep and helps clean the toxins responsible for Alzheimer's disease and other neurological disorders.
